welcome back to the Skaject folks! this week, it’s the Specials’ 1996 release, Today’s Specials
Today’s Specials is a full cover record – we got jazz standards, classic ska and reggae, and even some Neil Diamond and the Clash here! im only gonna be mentioning the source artists for songs i mention below, but i dig this kinda album.
Take Five is a very mellow, dubbier track, and a neat take on a jazz standard written by Paul Desmond. Pressure Drop, Maytals cover, is real good, easily a fave from here.
im kinda meh on the Neil Diamond cover, A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, and the cover of The Clash’s Somebody Got Murder is fine – im not super familiar with the source material, which i think is a part of my opinions of those, haha. i dug the Desmond Dekker Shanty Town 007 cover, and i REALLY enjoyed their version of Bob Marley’s Simmer Down.
but yeah! on the whole, a neat record. fun listen.
faves – Pressure Drop, Simmer Down
