hello folks! our weekly review this week is The Campfire Headphase, released by the Boards of Canada in 2005.

i was really pleasantly surprised by my last exposure to Boards of Canada – despite being friends with plenty of folks that knew and liked the band, id gone quite a long time without really any exposure to them, and Music Has the Right to Children was a really nice time – i recognize that im not always in the space to listen to spacey, layered, atmospheric electronic music, but Music was good music.

i largely have the same opinion about The Campfire Headphase. i think there’s a bit more here that pulled my ear, and im not sure if its pre exposure to the band’s style or a solid change is songwriting approach, but a few track here really leapt out at me. Chromakey Dreamcoat, coming in as the second track, has a strained, grainy, repeating acoustic guitar loop/hook that the song builds and weaves around in a really cool way. it almost feels like theyre building around it in the same way other songs would build themselves around a percussive beat. its neat, and it just burrows its way into your brain. it also does something i noticed a few other tracks on the record do, which was have a bit of an intro or outro connected to the end of the track, rather than having that transitional sound be its own track on the record. Dayvan Cowboy was another big highlight for me – potentially expectedly, considering that it plays into those western guitar strums once it breaks into the second half of the track.

i unfortunately dont have a ton more specific to say about the other tracks on the record, other than that i quite enjoyed them and there some really fun textures aa you begin diving in.
