Aesop Rock & Blockhead – Garbology
welcome back folks! this week, we’re listening to Garbology, from 2021!
Garbology has Aesop Rock reuniting with producer Blockhead for a full record – previously Blockhead had only provided production on parts of Aesop’s early records.
i’ll admit, im less enthused about this one. part of it is that im not as into the beats here.
sometimes, like on Difficult or All the Smartest People, i feel like theyre deliberately a bit odd, where the sense of unease leans into the song’s themes, and those tracks work really well! More Cycles almost feels like a beat that MF DOOM would use, especially around the main hook.
but in many of the songs the beats are just not in a style i like, or Aesop adjusts his flow to match the beat in a way im not jelling with.
they also have a guest feature from Homeboy Sandman, and its fine. im not a fan but its not like, critical failures in the song or anything.
on the whole, i think this is just less my speed than normal.
faves – Difficult, All the Smartest People

Garbology – 5/10
