welcome back to the Skaject folks! we’re returning to Fishbone this week for Chim Chim’s Badass Revenge as we continue through 1996.

man this really is the week for slight musical shifts huh. Chim Chim’s Badass Revenge shows Fishbone as almost completely dropping the ska sound and embracing heavier influences. it’s still present in some places – you can hear a bit if it in Alcoholic, for example, but largely this is a heavier alt rock album. and like – two founding member left the band before this record, and another would leave after, and there was a label shift involved as well. they even kinda address their relationship with their relationship to the music industry with the track Rock Star.

as you can probably tell from the above summary, i was kinda mid on this one. there were a few tracks that stood out to me. oddly i really liked the long-ass In the Cube, about being immersed in shit and wanting to break out (mostly surprising because i wasnt as huge on Sourpuss, later in the record). Love…Hate is frantic and fun, with a sax solo thats great! the above mentioned Alcoholic is really good as well.

on the whole, however, i thought it was just solid. i liked the intro and transitional tracks, and thought the lyrical content here was neat, but largely this was less my style and more just aight for me.

faves – In the Cube, Alcoholic, Love…Hate
