Hepcat – Scientific
welcome back to the Skaject folks! this week, LA’s Hepcat returns to the Skaject with Scientific, their 1996 record!
Hepcat delivers a very solid record of classic ska sounds here – its one i dont have tons of specific thoughts about, but that is incredibly pleasant to listen to. Bobby & Joe is a really fun track thats a lil dark, haha. Black Sky is smooth as hell. Keep On and Home are mellower tracks with a hell of a hook.
the instrumental tracks, like Solo and Dollar Dance, are def the highlight for me – thats not intended as a slight on the vocals, which i largely do like, but i really like me an instrumental ska track (esp from artists who only do them occassionally) and like the way the compositiond have to be structured around fact that there’s no vocals to centralize the track. the radio call in bit at the end of Dollar Dance is really good too, and i had a good time with Yoko Zunna, the closer.
on the whole, real solid!
faves – Solo, Keep On, Dollar Dance, Lovin’ Man, The Fool
