hello all! this week, we’re starting a new discography by taking a look at the 1989 debut record from Seattle grunge band Nirvana, Bleach!

ive heard the hits from Nirvana (so, for example, About a Girl on here wasnt new), but i basically havent done any further investigation before this deep dive. even still, i dont think i was expecting something this heavy and rough for their debut – after some reading, im finding out that their other two records have much less influence from metal, whereas like, Paper Cuts, probably the heaviest track here, is pretty weighty musically and lyrically. a lot of this is lighter, but it leans heavier overall, and took a bit of warming up to – and thats not even getting into the lyrics, haha.

on the whole though, there were some neat tracks here. their cover of Love Buzz, which had been their debut single, is also pretty good. not lyrically complicated, and lets them really flex over the solo and outro. very fun song. About a Girl is the lasting like, single, on the album, and that makes sense as the poppiest track here.

i dig Sifting as the original closer – i think adding Big Cheese and Downer on the reissue kinda cut a bit if its effect off, as much as i really like the chorus in Downer.

faves – About a Girl, School, Love Buzz, Negative Creep, Swap Meet
dislikes –

Bleach – 7/10

next week, we’ll take a look at the record that catapulted them into the national spotlight, Nevermind
