Weekly Review: Maximum the Hormone – Bu-ikikaesu
hey yall! this week, we’re taking a look at Bu-ikikaesu, the 2007 record from Japanese band Maximum the Hormone!
i was pretty jazzed when i saw Maximum the Hormone on the recc list – i dont have any huge prior experience listening to them, but i remember them from anime circles in high school (after listening to this record, its mostly from ChuChu Lovely MuniMuni MuraMura PrinPrin, lol). i never actually watched the Death Note anime, and so i dont have particular affinity to those tracks, but i was pleasantly surprised to realize that the Akagi theme was both by them and on this record – extremely cool!
was surprised by how varied the sounds are here – from the bit i knew going in i knew they were mostly hardcore with some other elements, but i was extremely surprised when Kuso breakin’ Nou breakin’ Lilly had ska guitar rhythms across the whole song, for example. i will admit to not loving the more growly vocals, but on the whole i really dug what was going on here. Lousiana Bob, for example, is a really solid hard rock/metal track thats a nice listen but doesnt really grab me, but man the bridge kicks ass on this song.
i did try to look up some of the english translations for the lyrics, which was helpful in some places. Bu-ikikaesu being a track about a fiery kind of rebirth, whereas ChuChu is a song about hypersexualization, its neat! in other places, like the closer Koino Mega Lover, its nonsense.
faves – Bu-ikikaesu!!, Zetsubou Billy, Kuso breakin’ Nou breakin’ Lilly, Akagi, ChuChu Lovely MuniMuni MuraMira PrinPrin Boron Nururu ReroRero
dislikes –
Bu-ikikaesu – 8/10
