Goldfinger – Goldfinger
welcome back to the Skaject folks! we’re still introducing new bands to the Skaject, and this week we’re looking at the debut record of LA ska-punk band Goldfinger
man i have an odd relationship with Goldfinger. like many folks my age, Superman off their next record on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack warped my brain, so i will always have some fondness for their music (plus like, the many other excellent songs theyve put out), but i also listened to their discography out through The Knife during the Skahect 1.0, and there is a point at which im gonna cut them off this time (The Bosstones will get a similar treatment, fyi). but we’ll get into all that later!
they broke into the scene with this self-titled record, and man they do come out the gate swinging. i’m mid on Mind’s Eye, but the string of tracks after are all great, with Here In Your Bedroom being my absolute favorite. tonally, Goldfinger’s writing has a kind of arrogance to it – in Mind’s Eye, for example, he comes off possessive in a way that just feels bad, but Here In Your Bedroom pulls off a kind of vulnerability that works really well.
musically, its a lil rough around the edges – Only A Day, for example, is a song i enjoy but sometimes feels like there’s a disconnect between parts of the track – in the mix between vocals and instruments, and in between sections of the song’s structure. that being said, i really do like the kind of high energy music they bring – the choruses on this album are phenomenal, esp on tracks like Answers, and i like that they can slow it down for songs like King For a Day. a really strong start for the band.
faves – Stay, Here In Your Bedroom, Only a Day, Anxiety, Anything, Miles Away
