Buck-o-Nine – Barfly
welcome back to the Skaject folks! this week, we’re looking at another second record, with Buck-o-Nine’s Barfly –
this album was really solid. i dont think there was anything here that blew my socks off, but i was more engaged with this record than i was with Songs in the Key of Bree. part of that is that theyre putting forward songs that are a bit more of a poppier, palatable sound – they sound a lot like Mustard Plug on this record, to be honest.
the opener, Callin’ in Sick, is far and away my favorite song here. there’s a kind of earnestness to “fuck work” tracks that always makes them at worst interesting, and frequently very very good. this one is quite good. it doesnt hurt that i first heard it on a day that i wanted to call in sick.
this record also has a number of covers – Wikipedia claims that each one was selected by a different band member from tracks theyd play live, and is a bit of a nod to their influences. i wasnt familiar with any of them other than the really good cover of Sound System, where theyre pushed to kinda move at Operation Ivy’s speed and they do a really good job at it. Pass the Dutchie is a Musical Youth cover, Teenagers from Mars comes from The Misfits, and Wrong Em Boyo is a The Clash track – all are p solid but i think i enjoyed them more the further into the album they got, with Wrong Em Boyo as my fave of those three.
v interested to see where they go from here!
