Voodoo Glow Skulls – Firme
welcome back to the Skaject folks! this week, we’re taking a look at Voodoo Glow Skulls’ second record, released in 1995 – Firme.
ive really enjoyed listening to SoCal bands from around this time, as they are the shows that the local bands i listened to wouldve been going to before getting started. i get that a LOT from this record – and it makes sense, Voodoo Glow Skulls comes from my hometown.
and this record is relentless – from moment one of Shoot the Moon through Land of Misfit Toys’s outro, this record is fast and slows down for very little. there are a few places, like the bridge for Give Me Someone I Can Trust or the chorus on Construction, where they change up the pace, but on the whole the songs blast through their themes of drinking and partying and uncertain times of coming into adulthood. it does lead to a kind of sameness to the texture of the songs, especially in the first half, which causes that section of the record to blend together, but honestly i keep imagining how fun these would be to see at shows, haha.
as a side note, in 1996 they release Firme (en Español), which flips the language on the record, with most of it in Spanish and El Coo Cooi in English. pretty fun!
faves – Shoot the Moon, Empty Bottles, El Coo Cooi, Construction, Malas Palabras
dislikes –
Firme – 7/10
our next record will be Buck-O-Nine’s Barfly!
