welcome back to the Skaject folks! we’ll be looking at a debut record this week – this time, from Canada’s The Planet Smashers with their self-titled album, The Planet Smashers!

The Planet Smashers are another band i covered pretty thoroughly in the previous edition of the Skaject – this record is a very interesting starting point in their discography. The Planet Smashers don’t ever become a squeaky clean band – their transition isn’t quite like the one i know the Aquabats go through, for example – but they spend a lot of time over the next few albums sanding down the type of stuff like Pee in the Elevator or even Pierce Me. tracks like 2 Souvlaki Pita, 1 Fry and Skah of Iran as instrumental tracks show a high talent in raw ska energy, and across this record they show a canny knack for hooks and catchy tunes, but this record is honestly very rough around the edges. a lot of this is just raw from a production standpoint, and lyrically it feels a bit jumbled. there are places where this album really shines, but there are also places where it’s obvious they still have tons of room to grow.

faves – Mission Aborted, Pee In the Elevator, 2 Souvlaki Pita, 1 Fry, Shithead, My Love (Vampire), The Manta Ray Dance, Skah of Iran
dislikes –

The Planet Smashers – 5/10
