hello folks! this week’s Weekly Review is Hold Your Color, by Pendulum!

first things first – i had a really, really good time with Pendulum’s Hold Your Color. most of this record was new to me, though i feel like ive heard Through the Loop before and parts of Out Here and Blood Sugar, but it may have been passing exposure.

i struggle a bit to talk concretely about what particularly i enjoyed here – im an enjoyer of EDM music but far from a scholar, so im not always certain how to talk about it. this is a place where, part of the way through, i realized it might actually benefit from a song-by-song breakdown, but i had that realization a bit late. so, enjoy a bit of my highlights as i went through the record!

i will say that Pendulum can craft some really cool movements within songs – Girl In the Fire in particular stands out for me. i really grew to like Slam over my listens as well – the main synth hooks on the song are excellent. Out Here moves through a few different phases over its runtime, alternating between being ethereal and intense, with the “tearing down the wall” and the leadup hook tying the track together. Hold Your Color has some really excellent drums throughout the movements of the track, and i like the way they use vocals a LOT on this song.

even tracks which have segments that im less fond of, still have parts that i enjoy a lot – the middle of The Terminal, for example, is a really good time, despite me being less fond of the beginning of the track.

faves – Slam, Through the Loop, Girl In the Fire, Out Here, Hold Your Color, Blood Sugar
