Weekly Review: Megadeth – Rust In Peace
hello folks! this week for the weekly review, we’re listening to Rust In Peace, released in 1990 by Megadeth!
Holy Wars…The Punishment Due opens the record with a killer instrumental segment, then laments the way religion can drive war. the back half of the track, The Punishment Due, opens up a bit more, but im less fond of some of what they do with the exception of the solos. the intro for Hangar 18 snapped me back to hearing this song in Guitar Hero 2, which was likely most folks my age’s intro to it, haha. i had completely forgotten i was familiar with the song already. killer track. Take No Prisoners is another anti-war song – really really like the drums throughout this song but especially in the intro. Five Magics is fun – really really like that electricity is one of the schools of magic. i think the high fantasy metal tracks are almost always a good time, haha. Poison Was the Cure is aight. i think the long intro here doesnt do much for the track, but the guitar here sounds extremely fun. Lucretia’s also p neat. Tornado of Souls has a comparatively more even approach, which i think works really well. obviously the solos still reach really high but a lot of the rest of the track is more measured. Dawn Patrol, the shortest track on the record, has a bass performance that just hangs over the track. Rust In Peace…Polaris round the album out with a fiery track – really really good.
faves – Hangar 18
dislikes –
i had a really fun time with this – i dont know that i can speak much to it, but the instrumentation here was just extremely on point the whole goddamn album. i was kinda hit or miss on some of the lyrics, but on the whole this was an absolute blast. its also fun to see the huge influence this had on bands that would come later, and i definitely felt it on this one.
Rust In Peace – 8/10
for the next Weekly Album Review, i’ll be listening to the B-52’s self titled record. i’ll be back on Friday, March 22nd, with that review and to pick another weekly record, and in the meantime, let me know what album you’d like me to review! (i pool all suggestions in one place, and draw a person, then one pick from that person, so feel free to drop as many as you’d like! if you leave an email or username i’ll contact you when i’ve gotten through all your suggestions.)
