hey folks! we’re back with another review From the Vault, continuing the discography review of The Decemberists! this series of reviews covers the band’s whole discography, from 2003’s 5 Songs EP all the way to 2018’s Travelling On! this review was originally written in October 2021.

next in the discography, we’re checking out the extra tracks from the previous record in the form of the EP Florasongs!

i really like Why Would I Now? and it grew on me a lot over the listens. of the tracks on the EP i think this is the one that most wouldve fit on the full album – it kind of addresses the same points as The Singer Addresses and Anti-Summersong. Riverswim has a pleasent vibe with an aura of danger below, with the “drown us” chorus. i went back and forth so hard on Fits & Starts. the audio quality of the track is rough on Meloy’s voice, but honestly i think its worth it for their take on like, a punk track. its nice to see them try it, even if it didnt make it onto a full LP, haha. not a huge fan of The Harrowed and the Haunted or Stateside.

faves – Why Would I Now?, Fits & Starts
dislikes –

honestly i think my feelings here are roughly analogous to the WATWWABW, but in microcosm – solid start, gem(s) in the middle, some less impressive parts around those that kinda lose me. worth a listen for sure if you were a fan of WATWWABW or The King Is Dead, probably a pass if you werent.

Florasongs – 4/10

next up is the most recent full record (for now) – I’ll Be Your Girl
