Weekly Review: Scientist – Meets the Space Invaders
this week for the weekly review, i’m listening to Scientist Meets the Space Invaders, by Scientist. i’m brand new to Scientist, but i’m excited to check out some dub!
this record kicks off at a very laid back and deliberate pace with Beam Down – a mostly bass driven track that mixes in some fun percussive flairs and playing with a bit of reverb. a very nice time. Red Shift is a nice rhythm – love the melody line on this one, esp as the track fully develops near the end. really enjoy the shift into Time Warp too. the lil bits of guitar and piano on this track are fantastic, i feel like im getting glimpses of them through some kind of shroud. Cloning Process brings the energy up a lil bit – not to a huge degree, but it’s definitely some high moments. fun use of vocals here. Pulsar’s got a super optimistic vibe to it – this is an island time track for sure. i like this one. Laser Attack is a v fun track – def a slow burn but i like where it goes. plus the sfx on this one are v funny, thematically. Dematerialize is a p subtle track – lotta really fun stuff happening here. i dig it. weirdly, Fission FEELS like an outro, haha. an exceedingly good vibe. Super Nova Explosion does some extremely fun stuff with it’s drums, and i have a real good time with the reggae guitars that pop in and out. our closer here is Quasar, and i dig it. good time.

i really dug this record – it’s a shame i was kinda in the mood for something a little more… i dunno, forward? that being said – the bass on this record was phenomenal. it’s funky, it’s groovy, it’s the backbone of this record. all the fun stuff the guitar and reverb do (and they do a lot) is all built on top of that beautiful beautiful bass. a deeply pleasant album to listen to. i don’t think this cracks into like, a record i’m gonna be obsessed with for a while, but i don’t think i’ll ever complain about it getting put on.
Scientist Meets the Space Invaders – 7/10
the selection for this week’s suggestion pool is Iggy Pop’s The Idiot, from 1977. i’ll be back next Friday, September 9th for a review, and in the meantime, let me know what album you’d like me to review! (i pool all suggestions in one place, and draw a person, then a pick from that person, so feel free to drop as many as you’d like! if you leave an email or username i’ll contact you when i’ve gotten through all your suggestions.)
